Vacationing

[Continuing this thread, in which Spy has convinced Engineer to spend a vacation with him. Fishing, fine dining, and some enemy bonding ensue.


Engineer steps into the elevator, hitting the button for their floor, pulling at his collar to loosen that next button.]

Hey, thanks again for the dinner and the suit. I'll have to put it to use some other time to justify your spendin' money on all this.

I'll tell you that you're right, but I'mm not gonna tell you which of those it is.

[He's grinning the whole time. His rod twitches again, and he gets right to it.]

I'm assumin' this Sniper was too busy to come with you out here? Or is vacationing somethin' he prefers to do with that girlfriend you were tellin' me about?

He ees taking her camping and zhey are going to have a big bonfire. I assume zhere will be no more forest afterwards.

[He watches eagerly.]

But eets for zhe best, he rarely does anyzzing wez her. Afraid zhe Administrator will be hiding een zhe bushes to see.

Why would the Administrator care about how he spends his vacations? So long as he's not talkin' about business with her, that is.

[He reels the next fish in. This one is putting up a fight.]

[Spy grins, he wanted to see one of those whiskered ones up close and now's his chance.]

I doubt eet. He ees a Sniper. He probably eesn't talking at all.

I have no idea why he's so paranoid.

You get like that when you're out on your own for a long time. Learn to depend only on yourself. It keeps you alive, but I can't say you're really livin'.

I am trying to teach him zhe difference. Someday I will accomplish eet.

[A few raindrops patter down on them, but Spy is more interested in the fish.]

[Engineer finally gets the fish- it's a bigger one than the last two, and he's lively, jumping out of Engineer's hand. Back into the water he goes- Engineer sighs, getting another worm.]

Does she know what he does?

Au revoir.

[He sadly watches the fish make his break for freedom.]

Yes of course, she ..

[He trails off as he realizes that he hasn't actually said that Sniper's girlfriend happens to be a Pyro. And that he most definitely shouldn't say that. For all their safety.]

Of course she does.

[He looks over at that pause, catching it; however, he doesn't bring it up.]

He's lucky to have her, then. Some people can't understand. Or they shouldn't understand as it is. This life ain't for everyone.

Though if she knows what it is he does, I can see why he'd be worried about the Administrator. They keep some of the more sordid details of our work very quiet.

I zhink zhats what he ees afraid of. Zhat zhey will try and use her as leverage. I suppose eets entirely possible. But eet does no good to constantly worry about somezzing zhat may never happen.

He has no idea how lucky he ees zhough.

He might not. Maybe he's just afraid of losin' her, though. I can't say I'd blame him.

I cannot relate, I have no idea what zhat ees like.

Well, how would you feel if it was you and him? It ain't really the same, but he is your friend.

I would protect him until zhe end.

[ he says it without hesitation. Then remembers that he's talking to an enemy. ]

I should not be telling you zhis should I?

Probably not, but honestly, it's good to know you've got at least one other friend out there. In this line of work, it doesn't hurt to have someone watchin' your back.

Unfortunately he ees not at my base anymore so zhere ees little I can do to --

[ He trails off as his line twitches, grabbing the fishing rod before the whole thing gets dragged over the side of the boat. He starts to reel it in, but the tension on the line makes him nervous that it's going to snap. ]

I zhink I have caught a boulder.

[Engineer puts a pin in that note as he scoots over to Spy's side of the boat, prepared to help him reel it in if need be.]

Here's hopin'. Keep pullin' it in, nice and steady.

[ He does as instructed, slowly reeling in. The rod is bent into a C and the line is jiggling around, but whatever he's caught is slowly coming to the surface with it. ]

Eef zhis drags me down eento zhe water to eat me, tell Scout he cannot have my car.

I'd grab a hold of your jacket to keep you in, but I get the feelin' you'd rather drown than me tear it.

You would be correct.

[ Closer and closer to the surface it comes until it's splashing around. A big brown catfish trying its best to break the line by rolling around and thrashing. ]

[sentryslinger]

[The rain is picking up, mirroring the fight with the catfish. Since he can't grab Spy's suit, Engineer instead tries to get as close as he can to the edge.]

I'll grab him the second he comes close enough. Just keep holdin' him, alright?

[not_onyourside]

[Spy leans back, fearful that they're going to tip the boat over. The catfish flips himself out of the water, the momentary slack on the line sending Spy tumbling onto his back, but at least he's still in the boat.

A few more moments and he's reeled it in far enough for the fish to be at the surface against the boat, splashing water everywhere.]
