[Continuing this thread, in which Spy has convinced Engineer to spend a vacation with him. Fishing, fine dining, and some enemy bonding ensue.


Engineer steps into the elevator, hitting the button for their floor, pulling at his collar to loosen that next button.]

Hey, thanks again for the dinner and the suit. I'll have to put it to use some other time to justify your spendin' money on all this.

[Engie laughs.]

You sure you won't teach me your ways with 'em?

[He takes off his jacket this time, the garment still kind of stifling for him.]

Eef you wish to leave our comfortable room and go prowl zhe night I would be happy to show you some technique.

[He looks ever so smug behind that cigarette, gathering the cards up and shuffling them himself. He arcs them up into the palm of his hands so they fall back down perfectly shuffled.]

I will admit eet takes years of practice.

Mastering any craft does. I think I'll stay in for the night, though. Wouldn't want to get caught in the rain again.

You are going to run out of clean clozzes to change eento. Or clozzes at all.

[He deals out the cards, arching an eyebrow at his own. Full house. Not too bad.]

And we wouldn't want that.

[He's got nothing, and his face shows it. Not even close.]

[Aww, don't make that face Engie, now he feels bad about winning. Well... a little bit anyway.]

Of course not.

[Smug smile is smug.]

[Despite his whole hand of nothing, he's going to see what he gets with the cards. He draws one, then two, then three. His expression doesn't get much better.

He glances over his cards at Spy, trying to read that smile on his face. That's not encouraging, but maybe it's a bluff.]

How's your hand over there?

Quite well zhank you.

And yours?

[ He knows he's won, but it never hurts to be polite. ]

Probably not well enough.

[He says that with a smile. At least he's taking it well.]

Do not worry, I will not hold eet against you.

[He sets his cards down, spreading them out.]

[Engie lays his flat- two pair.]

Guess these socks will have to go.

I guess so.

[He diligently starts shuffling again, trying to judge just how many layers Engie has on. His luck can't hold out forever and he's sure to be losing some of his own clothing pretty soon.]

[Engie adjusts that undershirt, not so sure if it'll be the next thing to go, or his pants.]

So if ya don't play with your teammates, where did you learn to play poker?

Prison.

[He deals the cards again, frowning at his own hand. He has a pair of kings. Not exactly what he's hoping for.]

Zhough I can assure you zhat eet was not strip poker.

Probably a good thing, given the setting.

[He's doing better this time with three of a kind. He draws a couple of cards, hoping to better his chances.]

How long were you there? Or is that classified information?

[Spy draws himself a second pair, but they're a set of twos.]

Four years. I zhink everyzzing about my life before zhis ees classified. Zhough I cannot fazzom why. Eets not as eef I was planning to run around telling everyone.

[Looks like it's just those three 10s for Engie. He glances over his cards, trying to read Spy's face.]

I don't expect goin' back to it is an option either, should you live through this.

[He grimaces, though more from what they're talking about than his cards.]

[Engie puts his cards on the table, hoping those three 10s will be enough.]

Classified or not, I'm sure you weren't the only one in a bad situation before this job came along. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the other mercenaries were picked out of jail, either.

[Spy sets down his double pair, so much for his winning streak. Off goes his jacket to hang on the back of his chair.]

Eet would not surprise me. Where else would zhey find people desperate enough to agree to zhis?

[There's a smile from Engineer. He'll be dealing that next hand, thank you.]

All over, apparently. Australia, Scotland, Russia. Wherever you find men like Soldier.

[He tops off their wine, setting the now empty bottle to the side.]

What I wonder ees what lies zhey told Scout to get him to join.

[He nods appreciatively, wetting his whistle with the wine before continuing to shuffle.]

A boy like that? I'm bettin' all they had to do was offer him money. It ain't about the paycheck, though. It'd be about makin' his mama proud.

How would she be proud of him killing people?

I'd imagine he doesn't tell her that part. Just that he's a workin' man with a job that can help support the family.
