Vacationing

[Continuing this thread, in which Spy has convinced Engineer to spend a vacation with him. Fishing, fine dining, and some enemy bonding ensue.


Engineer steps into the elevator, hitting the button for their floor, pulling at his collar to loosen that next button.]

Hey, thanks again for the dinner and the suit. I'll have to put it to use some other time to justify your spendin' money on all this.

It would be, but imagine all you could do if ya didn't fear death. Not squabbling for decades, like those men running these companies, but real good, you know?

I do not zhink I would want such power. I would not use eet wisely.

And what I zhink ees good may not be so for ozzers.

Well, better someone like you than most of the Spies I've met. Or Soldier. Or hell, either of our bosses.

[He adjusts his Gunslinger, flexing his fingers again.]

[ He crawls back into his own bed, snuggling down into the covers. ]

Eef eet was not zhis eet would be somezzing else. I do not sleep straight zhrough most nights.

[His eyes follow Spy to his bed, stopping at the window and the pounding rain outside for only a second.]

You do sleep like a cat in a room full of rockin' chairs. Nightmares?

Most nights. Ozzer times I wake up and have no idea where I am.

Getcher mind stuck somewhere in the dream, and then you can't get out, huh? I'm guessin' wherever it takes you isn't a good place.

Prison mostly.

Not somezzing I want to relive.

I don't blame ya there, partner.

[He looks down to his hand, his mind turning again. He can't help but want to fix problems- it's just in his nature.]

You ever thought of gettin' yourself a pet?

I have one. A rabbit. His name ees biscotti.

Good. I ain't a doctor, but they say havin' a companion around can help keep ya grounded when you wake up from things like that.

Eets helpful. But eet would be better to simply not have to wake up like zhat een zhe first place.

If you ever find a cure, you can let us in on it.

Maybe you oughtta get somethin' more like a dog. Or a roommate.

[not_onyourside]

I am gone too often for a dog. Eet would be lonely. And no one would want to room wez a Spy.

But zhank you. I will be fine.

I'm sure you've been tellin' yourself that for years. It ain't true yet.

Oh yes eet ees. You just are unaware because you are not a Spy.

[He gives Spy a sad smile.]

If you say so, partner.

[not_onyourside]

[ He can't see that in the dark, but the tone is enough. He sighs and wraps the blanket around himself tighter. ]

Good night again Engineer.

[sentryslinger]

G'night, Spy. You sleep tight.

[And Engineer leans back to do the same, but ends up just staring at the ceiling, his flesh-and-blood hand still picking at his metal one on occasion as the fingers on it twitch.]

[ Spy actually does fall back asleep, sprawling so he takes up the whole bed. He's not going to wake up until light starts pouring through the window onto his face. He groans and buries his face in the pillow clearly not ready to wake up yet. ]

[Engie is already up by the time Spy stirs, sitting on the end of the bed and making adjustments to his hand. He apparently put on underpants at some point, but is bare other than that.

Chances are he got no sleep at all.]

[He groans and flops over onto his back, eyeing Engie.]

Did you get any sleep?

[sentryslinger]

Little bit.

[You know, before the nightmare.]

Looks like you slept pretty well, partner.

[not_onyourside]

I always sleep better when I am not on zhe base.

You should try and get some more sleep. Eets not as eef we have any pressing engagements.

I'll be fine with what I got. Sometimes, your mind just gets too busy to let you sleep.
