Vacationing

[Continuing this thread, in which Spy has convinced Engineer to spend a vacation with him. Fishing, fine dining, and some enemy bonding ensue.


Engineer steps into the elevator, hitting the button for their floor, pulling at his collar to loosen that next button.]

Hey, thanks again for the dinner and the suit. I'll have to put it to use some other time to justify your spendin' money on all this.

[At least that part he can do without instruction, reeling it back in and silently breathing a word of thanks that it didn't get caught on the log. Or dredge up a boot.

He diligently puts his hands back in the proper position, flicking the line over his head and sending it sailing a good distance from the boat. It's not as far as Engineer's, but at least he didn't get their lines crossed.]

Like zhat?

He grabs the bag of baked goods.]

Now we wait.

How do I know eef I have a fish?

[He wedges the fishing rod in between his seat and the edge of the boat.]

You'll see the string start pullin'. Got to react quick when it happens, but I expect we'll have to wait at least a little while. That's why we went ahead and got breakfast.

[He offers the bag to Spy.]

[ Spy fishes out a sprinkled doughnut, watching his fishing rod while he munches. ]

And zhen I just reel eet een?

We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. For now, just enjoy the peace and quiet.

[ Peace and quiet is not something Spy often stops to appreciate. He sits back in the boat, finishing off his doughnut and watching the turtle swiftly swim away from them.

It really is beautiful out there. His eyes keep coming back to the fishing rod though, waiting for something to happen.]

[With the chaos both on and off the battlefield, Engineer doesn't get as much time to relax as he'd like, either. He's happy to take in the view and enjoy the serenity around them, though he does look to the clouds that are rolling in on the horizon- they're not blocking the sun yet, but it won't be long before they do.

He's not bothering watching his pole, though he notices Spy is.]

A watched pot never boils, Spy.

Zhat ees entirely untrue.

[But he understood the sentiment, trying to look elsewhere. Fortunately he was easily distracted, watching some dragonflies skimming the surface of the water without leaving any ripples.]

Maybe zhe fish are still sleeping.

They might be. The rain oughtta wake 'em up, though.

[ He glares up at the sky, silently scolding it for possibly getting him wet. ]

Ees rain good or bad for fishing? Will zhey all just run away and hide?

Rain can be good. The ones it'll be bad for is us, since we're out here.

So long as zhere ees not lightning.

[ He hates lightning. It's not only electricity shooting out of the sky, it starts fires. Another thing he hates. ]

We definitely won't be out here if it looks like a storm. A little rain won't kill us, though. Just leave us real wet.

[not_onyourside]

Well good. I do not like lightning.

[ The tip of his fishing rod bends ever so slightly and he snaps to attention, staring at it. ]

[It catches Engineer's attention, too.]

Looks like you might have somethin'. Grab your rod and start reelin' it in- not too fast, but not too slow.

So zhe idea ees to not scare eet away?

[He holds the rod firmly, starting to reel it in, the rod starts bending again, apparently whatever is at the end of it isn't too pleased that their snack had a hook in it.]

Yeah. You'll want to pull against it and lure it in. Make it think it's got a chance.

Toy wez eet zhen?

[How very Spy-like. Maybe he will enjoy this. He pulls the rod back a little bit, reeling it in slowly. As it gets closer to the boat there's some turmoil in the water from something shiny and silver at the end of his line.]

That's right.

[He leans over to take a look.]

Almost there. You're doin' great.

[not_onyourside]

[Spy cracks a smile, pleased with himself. Closer and closer the fish gets, until he can actually pull the fish out of the water and onto the bottom of the boat, flopping around at the end of his hook.]

I did eet!

[He is so happy with himself. The fish, however; is not, trying to flip out of the boat.]

Good job, partner!

[He reaches under the seat and empties the beers out of the bucket, scooping up some water from over the side of the boat and depositing the fish into it.]

Not a bad size, either. A little small, but a catch is a catch.

He has spots.

[The shiny spotted fish swims round and round in the small space making little splashes, not much happier about that.]

Hush you, you are going to be delicious.

[sentryslinger]

Sure is, assumin' we don't let him go for something bigger later.

[He grabs a beer and turns back to his rod, as patient as ever.]

Now you get more bait and do it again. It ain't so hard, is it?
