Vacationing

[Continuing this thread, in which Spy has convinced Engineer to spend a vacation with him. Fishing, fine dining, and some enemy bonding ensue.


Engineer steps into the elevator, hitting the button for their floor, pulling at his collar to loosen that next button.]

Hey, thanks again for the dinner and the suit. I'll have to put it to use some other time to justify your spendin' money on all this.

[He gets the implication, nodding as he sits on his own bed and gets to work.]

I don't think any of us sleep all that well these days, but some are worse than others.

Eets hard to rest comfortably when half zhe people on your team might blow up zhe base for no reason.

[He's silent for a while, twitching at every bolt of lightning.]

I have terrible nightmares. So even when I get to sleep, eet does not last long.

[Engineer is doing more watching of Spy than he is work, his brow furrowing in concern.]

Is there anything that helps ya get to sleep?

[He's facing the window and can't see him, so he figures that Engineer is just asking idly while scribbling on blueprints.]

Not really. Or I have not found eet yet.

[He sets his pencil down, thinking.]

And I don't expect you've seen a doctor about this particular problem, have you?

Well I am certainly not going to tell Medic. He would probably want to extract whatever ees wrong wez me and weaponize eet.

[sentryslinger]

[There's another crack of thunder, one loud enough to rumble the building.]

He might. Those Medics y'all have on RED seem less stable than any I've known on BLU.

[Spy cringes, curling into a ball. So much for his peaceful nap.]

I zhink everyone on RED ees less stable. Maybe zhat ees how zhey decide who goes to what team. Or how zhey recruit people.

Would you include yourself in that figure?

I am sure zhe BLU Spy has no trouble getting to sleep at nights.

[sentryslinger]

I wouldn't know. He and I don't talk much.

[He sets his eyes on that cringing ball under the covers.]

I knew a Pyro one time who was afraid of storms like this. Most of 'em don't like the rain, but he was terrified of 'em.

I only knew zhe one at Badwater and he seemed decent enough.

[Not that Spy really talked to him, not when he was wearing clothes anyway.]

Why would someone who burns people to deazh be afraid of a storm?

It was the rain for most of 'em. The thunder reminded him too much of explosions. He didn't like those, either.

[He sets his notebook down and heads to the closet, pulling out his dress pants and sliding into them.]

I'm gonna see if I can scrounge up some hot chocolate. That usually worked for him. Maybe it'll work here.

Eet sounds like metal trays being dropped on zhe floor.

[Which reminded him of things he didn't want to think about. He rolls over to protest that he's not anything like a Pyro, but hot chocolate actually sounds good.

Silently cursing he rolls back up into a ball. He'll be sure to tell Engineer how not like Pyros he is ... later.]

Zhank you.

It's no problem at all, partner. I'll be back in a minute.

[He puts on his dress shoes and heads out. It's several minutes later before he comes back, but at least he's carrying two mugs and a coffee pot full of hot cocoa.]

I had to convince the cooks to make it, but I did get it. You still awake?

I am still awake.

[ He sits up, pulling the covers up around him so he's still cocooned]

Zhank you. Zhat ees very kind of you.

[He takes the mug, smiling at the familiar scent of chocolate.]

[He smiles, happy to help, and settles on his bed with his own mug, leaving the coffee pot on the night stand.]

Anything to help.

[not_onyourside]

[He sips it happily, warming his hands and his insides.]

You are far kinder zhan I deserve.

[But he's still not anything like a Pyro.]

I'm just tryin' to repay you in some way. If gettin' you hot chocolate and talkin' you through a storm is what it takes, then that's what I'll do.

You really are a fixer of problems.

You do not need to repay me, I am always happy to go on vacation.

It'll ease my mind if I do.

[not_onyourside]

I do not understand.

[sentryslinger]

Just trust me on this one, Spy.

[He tops off his mug as thunder booms again outside.]

[not_onyourside]

Eef you say so.

[he still doesn't understand, but he'll accept it. For now. He drains his mug, enjoying the warmth before setting the mug to the side and sliding back down into his blanket cocoon.]

Do not let me sleep too long, I do not want to let zhose fish go to waste.

[sentryslinger]

You take as long as you need.

[He finishes his mug and settles back on his bed, resuming his work. The warmth from the drink must have gotten to him, too- he's asleep soon enough, pencil still in his hand.

So much for not letting Spy sleep too long- it's at least an hour, and the storm has only picked up outside.]
