[Continuing this thread, in which Spy has convinced Engineer to spend a vacation with him. Fishing, fine dining, and some enemy bonding ensue.


Engineer steps into the elevator, hitting the button for their floor, pulling at his collar to loosen that next button.]

Hey, thanks again for the dinner and the suit. I'll have to put it to use some other time to justify your spendin' money on all this.

[He puts his cards down.]

[Oh that smug grin gets more smug.]

Well, someone had to lose.

[He starts with the hat just because it's easiest, setting it beside him and dealing another hand. At least Spy seems to enjoy his win for one reason or another.]

[Spy's luck isn't as great with this hand. He doesn't even have a pair, just some random cards. At least one is a King, but other than that this round is dismal.

He sorts them around, as if he fiddles with them enough they'll magically turn into better cards.]

Zhat ees a good way to zhink of eet.

You learn to be positive in a game like this. Or with cards at all. I don't get to play with anyone but Pyro most of the time.

[Well shoot, this hand isn't much good, either. He draws three cards and hopes for the best, and he gets it, to a degree: he goes from nothing to a straight just like that.]

[Spy frowns when he only improves to a pair. Of threes no less.]

You often play strip poker with Pyros?

[He laughs.]

Nah, though wouldn't that be somethin'?

Zhat suit ees all one piece, zhey lose one hand and zhey're done for.

[Speaking of losing, he sets down his sad excuse for a hand, hoping against hope that maybe Engineer pulled something worse.]

That's if you get into the game far enough to have a hand at all. Or if there are even other people playin'. Most games, it's me, Pyro, and an armful of stuffed unicorns and puppy dogs.

[He shows his straight. Read 'em and weep, Spy.]

[He groans, and his Hashshashin goes to join Engie's hardhat.]

How embarrassing ees eet to lose to zhe unicorn?

[There's a knock at the door and Spy goes to let the porter back in, wheeling in a cart with their dinner on it.]

[Engie looks behind him, setting his cards down for a moment.]

Should we pause for dinner, or keep going?

I zhink a break ees een order.

[The porter shakes his head and leaves, obviously having the wrong idea about why these two men are sharing a room. Not that he'd care what they're doing after the tip Spy gave him.

Spy rolls the little cart over to the table. The catfish has been fried with delicate breading along with coleslaw and a basket full of seasoned biscuits that smell delicious. There's also a creamy sort of soup that has chunks of the two other fish they caught in it. ]

Zhis ees better zhan I expected a hotel restaurant to do honestly.

I have to say I agree. I'm not about to complain, though.

[He scoots the cards aside and makes room for dinner.]

We got anything to drink other than beer, or should I go get us something?

I should have asked him to bring us somezzing. Eet must have slipped my mind.

We should have gotten ice for zhe beer so eet stayed cold.

Yeah, it ain't so great now that it's room temperature. I picked the beer, so you pick what'll go with this.

Having never had a catfish before I have no idea. But zhe ozzer fish and zhis chowder type soup -- we could use some wine. White wine.

[He stands up, tugging his jacket closed around himself.]

Do not eat all of zhis before I return.

Alrighty.

[He gets out of his seat and decides to take a look at that weather while Spy is gone.]

[Spy heads downstairs, almost whistling as he thinks about all the fantastic ways the evening can go. They have room service, they're about to have wine, one of them is soon to be naked. Yes, things are going well.

On the other hand, he has a hunch that Engineer might be completely oblivious to what's going on. That or he's the most adept person to play hard to get that Spy has ever encountered.

There's a small store nearby selling wine and cheese, and he's the only customer in the storm. Spy barely notices the rain though, as he's having a wonderful time on this vacation. Better than he ever thought.

He returns to the room a few minutes later with two bottles of white wine in a cardboard carrier.]

[Engineer, in the meantime, has been watching the clouds roll by, the moon barely visible through them. The rain has stuck around, but he has no doubt it'll be gone by morning; that means they're going to be able to find entertainment elsewhere.

Grabbing the room key, he heads down to the lobby, and after a quick look around for Spy, stops by the front desk to inquire as to what kinds of activities there are for visitors around these parts. The clerk mentions the stores, as well as a gun show that'll be there next month. That sounds more like something Soldier would enjoy, and a month away is a month too late.

A fair next week- it comes around a few times a year. That's more up Pyro's alley, but they're getting there.

There's a movie theater, too- damn, he hasn't been to see a movie in some time. That might be promising.]

[There's a distinct lack of Engineer in the hotel room when Spy returns, but the fact his hardhat is still there means he should be coming back. Hopefully.

Spy procures some glasses from the bathroom. They're square tumblers for water when brushing your teeth, not ideal for drinking wine, but he guesses there's a first time for everything.

He also moves the table a bit so they can both eat while looking out at the lake. It's dark enough that little is visible except his own reflection, but every so often the moonlight catches the waves of the lake, making a beautiful glittering effect.

It's taking all his willpower not to dig into the food, because it smells delicious. Engineer better get back soon or he's eating it without him.]

[He's back several minutes after Spy.]

I thought I'd go ask what all there is goin' on around here. In good news, there's a lot- bad news is none of it falls this weekend.

Of course not. We would not be so lucky.

[He pours the wine with the polished grace of someone who's done it hundreds of times. Granted never into short square glasses, but the end result is the same.]

Anyzzing of interest?

A gun show one week, a fair the next. Some kind of a circus rollin' in in a few days. There is a movie theater, though.

Ees zhere? Playing anyzzing good?

[Not that he'd been to a movie in years. Anything would probably be interesting.

Spy settles into his chair, starting on the soup. It hasn't even gotten that cold from how long it's been sitting there. Still very tasty.]
